There are a few fashion shows I look forward to for the film production and narratives just as much as the fashion magic. For the past eighteen months, fashion weeks have found creative ways to use digital media to engage with us and take us on a journey, which is exactly how fashion house Celine has established a cult following. Creative Director Hedi Slimane has continued the trend this year with yet another outstanding film presentation of Celine’s latest collection.
Hedi Slimane’s Cosmic Cruiser presentation opens the way few fashion shows do: with shots of motorbikes kicking up dust in a forest. Set on the Grand Gaou Island (Île du Grand Gaou) in Southern France, Celine’s SS22 Men’s collection somehow takes a backseat to the daredevil motocross antics and the beautiful Mediterranean scenery.
Just as Slimane’s 2021 Teen Knight film showcased a gorgeous sixteenth-century castle, Cosmic Cruiser focuses attention on the massive bike ramps set among a dry forest and scrubby coastal dunes. Quick, frenetic edits of the film cut between the bikers, empty runways, scenery, and, finally, the models themselves, parading the rockstar-esque collection while FMX riders perform tricks in the beautiful blue sky. The open-air show underscores Slimane’s penchant for an unrestrained atmosphere, with drone shots enabling the film to hold a massive sense of scale.
The young models, punk-rock outfits, and motocross daredevils all combined to create an atmosphere of freedom; youthful escapism prevails, particularly as many countries resume life-as-almost-normal in this latter half of 2021. Slimane’s film, subtitled ‘RIDING A NEW AGE / RESTLESS DREAMS OF A COSMIC TEEN’, bursts with optimism for a post-pandemic culture, moving past the months of restrictions to a liberating celebration of youth.
