In 2022, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay played a key role in establishing the Mamanuca Environment Society and has led various efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable experiences throughout the islands. Recently, for World Environment Day, the resort commissioned a local artist, Stanley Joseph Waradi, to create an up-cycled marine sculpture called Taukei Momi, using old umbrellas, scrap metal, and plastic collected from around the resort. The sculpture, which consists of three dolphins and a whale, serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Fiji's endangered reefs and fragile marine life.
This art is a new way of recycling, removing waste otherwise dangerous to nature and sea life and creating amazing art pieces, many of them showcasing the beauty and fragility of marine life. As a recycling artist, I hope to address, the issue of waste through its reuse in a way that encourages more creative thinking as opposed to the consumerism that has become a plague to the environment.
Marriott International Fiji has also taken steps to conserve energy by implementing energy-efficient lighting systems and motion sensors. They have replaced all single-use plastic amenities in guest rooms, resulting in a significant reduction in plastic waste.The resort actively engages in sustainability initiatives, including coral planting, mangrove planting, and the establishment of a giant clam nursery and sea turtle sanctuary. These initiatives aim to educate guests about the importance of protecting Fiji's natural resources while allowing them to make a positive impact during their stay.
