After experiencing the longest lockdown on record this year, the city of Melbourne was more than ready to celebrate and bring the power of creativity back to their streets for their annual fashion festival. Despite Sydney Fashion Week's international reputation, Melbourne is undoubtedly Australia's cultural capital.
This M/FW Plaza Ballroom Runway is my love letter to Melbourne. After the doom and gloom of the pandemic and lockdowns, we are ready to party and dial up the glamour.
Now in its 27th year, the annual fashion event focuses on more than just fashion, integrating art, dining, travel, and advocacy, and transforming the city's most exciting spaces to showcase more than 250 emerging, established, and independent designers and labels.
Melbourne Fashion Week ran from November 15–21, featuring over 250 designers and 300 retailers.

Presented by Vogue Australia at Gardens House in the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Secret Garden Runway was the event to kick-start the season. Styled by the one and only Carlos Mangubat, Secret Garden Runway featured some of the latest collections from designers emblematic of the fashion industry today, such as Aje, Akira, Ginger & Smart, Leo Lin, Maara Collective, and Ngali, the winner of the 2021 National Indigenous Fashion Award.
On Tuesday evening, fashion and art came together for an immersive runway experience within the gallery spaces of one of the most iconic buildings in Melbourne, the National Gallery of Victoria. Guests strolled through the gallery space to enjoy looks from J’Aton Couture, Carla Zampatti, ALPHA60, Romance Was Born, Maticevski, Christine, Reina Melbourne, and dot COMME, as they were presented through live performances, moving vignettes, and installations.
An inspiring mid-week dose of fashion delivered as never before, comprising a Melbourne Fashion Week first, saw SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s mesmerising underwater world acting as the backdrop for a once-in-a-lifetime runway experience.
Slow fashion and sustainability were the main focus at the Aquarium Runway, featuring local designers including ELK, búl, SZN, and Sister Studios.
For day four, food and fashion explored new synergies for the Rialto Melbourne Dining Runway, set in the Rialto Melbourne piazza forecourt. The evening included a journey of feminine details, playful prints, and a fresh take on ready-to-wear staples, all served by culinary experts at Vue de Monde, Ronnie's, KSR Bar, and Sensory Lab.
Some of the local designers featured include Collective Closets, Coreprêt, Joslin, Kuwaii, Micky In The Van, Pfeiffer, TORRANCE, We Are Kindred, Vow Studio, and Harlow.
