Saint Laurent’s ‘The Director's Cut’ Is An Ode to Fashion and Film Lovers

Saint Laurent’s ‘The Director's Cut’ Is An Ode to Fashion and Film Lovers
Saint Laurent has gone punk with a bold menswear line by artistic director Anthony Vaccarello.

Instead of baby-faced six-foot-four male models sporting the S23 menswear line, YSL’s latest ‘Director's Cut’ campaign features the designer's latest collection modelled by an impressive array of cult cinema darlings, including David Cronenberg (Naked Lunch, 1991), Abel Ferrara (Body Snatchers, 1993), Jim Jarmusch (Coffee and Cigarettes, 2000), and Pedro Almodóvar (Bad Education, 2004).

Shot by famed fashion photographer David Sims, the campaign depicts Lynchian style figures in black-and-white ensembles, Kurt Cobain style sunglasses, and safety pins to boot. As fashion’s edginess merges with the gritty realism of indie cinema, the result is a campaign which feels vintage, chic, and undeniably cool.

It’s clear that Saint Laurent and their band of iconic enfants terribles have set the mood for fashion in 2023, which can be summed up in one word: alternative.
