Skinimalism combines skincare and minimalism to create a really refreshing experience.
For almost two years, we have been spending more time at home than we did back in 2019; therefore, from a beauty perspective, it's safe to say that we had more time to spend on skincare. The truth is, at the start of the new reality we live in today, every beauty/skincare goer enjoyed their free time putting together concoctions, face masks, hair masks, and having fun with at-home beauty tools. Even so, as the months passed, many of us realised that the real you is equally happy showing up as you are without using a 12-step skincare routine and a full face of makeup to cover acne scarring and undesirable pores. Not only is this good for the environment (reducing waste and carbon footprints), but experts say it's also great for your skin.
Personally, I have experienced excessive skincare efforts compromising my skin barrier and worsening my acne. So if you are looking to take a break from skincare, skinimalism will be your new bestie; as its name suggests, it is a combination of skincare and minimalism.
What is skinimalism, you ask?
According to Pinterest's 2021 Trend Predictions Report, 2021 marks the end of caked-on makeup. Instead, we'll embrace natural beauty and let our own skin show through. The new' effortlessly chic' routine is simple and sustainable. In particular, if we look at Australia, Canada and the UK, year on year, there's a 4x increase in searches for how to get naturally glowing skin.
Rarely do we see skincare trends backed by dermatologists and experts; however, skinimalism has them raving and praising its benefits.
"I think it's about going back to the basics when caring for your skin, but also loving your skin and how it is in everyday life," said Heather Brew, a board-certified physician assistant at Water's Edge Dermatology. "I think it's avoiding multiple products and layers of makeup and being true to your authentic self."
What does skinimalism look like?
It's already been mentioned that simplicity is key and that less is more. Think about hydration and sun protection as essential parts of your daily routine, and consider skinimalism an intelligent approach to skincare.
How should I choose products?
Simple beauty routines require using products with good formulas, which means avoiding separate products for day and night, but instead using products with active multitasking ingredients. As a result, they'll perform more efficiently and will work whenever you need them; Collette Haydon, the founder and formulator of Lixirskin, says, "a good formula does it all".
Here are some of the best brands to keep on your radar if you want to dive deeper into the skinimalism world:
Here is an example for you skin minimalists. Check it out and make it your own.

Casper tip: Swap your morning cleanser for some cold water to awaken your senses
Serum
If you are looking for a way to brighten up your complexion and reveal your true self, vitamin C will be your best bet.
Moisturiser
You can just go straight with SPF as an alternative, but if you are concerned about acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, choose one with niacinamide as the main ingredient.
SPF
The two options here are a natural SPF formula or a tinted formula; whatever you choose, make sure it's 50/50+ and TGA-approved.
As a heads up, it doesn't matter if you're at home or the day is cloudy and you aren't going to be directly exposed to the sun; you still need to apply sunscreen to your face 365 days a year.
PM:
Cleanser
The options here are endless, but my skin is loving gel-based formulas these days; although our EIC is a fan of the rice powder cleanser by Humanrace,
Serums
Here's when you can be a bit more playful and use different products throughout the week. You should choose three products: a retinol-based product, an exfoliant (AHAs/BHAs), and a hydrating product (Collagen/Hyaluronic).
If you are looking for a way to brighten up your complexion and reveal your true self, vitamin C will be your best bet.
Cream/Oil Based Moisturiser
You may prefer one product over another, depending on your skin type and concerns. Still, your ultimate goal is to have glowing skin, so I would seriously consider adding an oil-based product (Retinol oil, Rosehip Oil, Squalane Oil) to this regimen.
That's Skinmalism explained - look for active ingredients, keep it simple, and let your true self shine!
