Visit Melbourne’s MPavilion This Summer

Visit Melbourne’s MPavilion This Summer
Melbourne’s iconic yet ever-changing landmark gets a new look for the ninth time.

Melbourne’s MPavilion opens again on December 8 with an all-new look for its ninth edition. Located in the Queen Victoria Gardens, the MPavilion is a pivotal part of Melbourne’s cultural calendar with a focus on community, hosting a program of free events each year.

This year, the Naomi Milgrom Foundation commissioned Bangkok-based architecture and design practice all(zone), which is led by internationally acclaimed architect Rachaporn Choochuey. The new design is a gorgeous canopy of bespoke, coloured nets and a waterproof membrane intended to celebrate ‘outdoor living’.

In an Australian first, the pavilion uses a membrane made of a barely visible, lightweight mesh supplied by French manufacturer Serge Ferrari – a cutting-edge material that’s ten times lighter than glass, but just as transparent. This innovative membrane will allow light and colour to shine through without compromising the structure’s weatherproofing, making for a gorgeous and stable pavilion.

We visualised rays of light flickering through layers of leaves that give a very relaxing ambience—like being under a big tree. We wanted MPavilion to be a place where people could meet, enjoy and live in the moment freely.
– RACHAPORN CHOOCHUEY, LEAD ARCHITECT AT ALL(ZONE).

MPavilion’s summer events program revolves around the theme ‘Under One Roof’, exploring diverse forms of connections and shared experiences. The ‘togetherness’ of the topic is underscored by the single canopy that will shelter each event, which fall under ‘projects, talks, meets, music, and kids’ categories. From DJ lessons and film screenings to food trucks and in-depth industry talks, there’s an event for every interest at MPavilion this December.

The ninth MPavilion opens to the public on December 8, while a free opening party featuring Dita, John Gómez, and Nick the Record will celebrate the new pavilion the following night. To find out more about what’s on at the pavilion this December, visit their website here.
