Why You Need to Try Dry Brushing

Here at Casper, we’re obsessed with the latest skin-care trend everyone is talking about: dry brushing. It’s a type of Ayurvedic medicine that has been around for centuries, and for good reason – it's believed to have an array of health benefits that aim to rejuvenate and revitalise your body and skin.

Practised by everyone from Miranda Kerr and Gwyneth Paltrow to our own EIC Maria Ugrinovski, this ancient practice comes with benefits that go beyond relaxation!

Firstly, dry brushing exfoliates and nourishes the skin by brushing away dry, dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and soft. Some claim that the technique also reduces the visibility of cellulite, while others believe it stimulates your lymphatic system by opening your pores and removing toxins through sweat. Although these benefits haven't been backed up by science, the anecdotal evidence suggests dry brushing can be beneficial if you do it consistently!

How to Dry Skin Brush

1. Start with your feet and work your way up: Dry brushing is particularly effective on the limbs. Brush your feet and ankles first before moving on to the rest of your body.

2. While brushing your arms and legs, use long, upward strokes rather than downward strokes. Brush upwards from your ankles to your thighs.

3. Try to maintain circular, clockwise strokes when brushing your torso (chest, torso, back, etc.).

4. Use gentle pressure when dry brushing so you don't irritate your skin. Brushing too hard can irritate the skin.

5. It's best to be gentle especially with sensitive areas like the inner thighs, the back of the knees, or the inner elbows.

6. Avoid brushing areas with inflammation, bruises, or wounds.

7. Do not over brush: Use 2–3 strokes per area. Brush the same area only once or twice.

8. When your skin is sensitive, dry brush once a week instead of every day if your skin gets irritated easily.

9. Dry brush your skin before stepping into the shower. This is an excellent way to wash way away all the dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.

10. And lastly always moisturise afterwards to keep skin supple and hydrated!
