Work is a state of reality – a necessary element of life. A reality interrupts the fashion show's idealised, fantasy-filled aesthetic vernacular. In the Fall/Winter 2022 Prada men's show by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, the Deposito of the Fondazione Prada is reimagined by AMO as a stage for action – a representation of heightened reality. Globally beloved Hollywood stars appear in the film: Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Asa Butterfield, Jayne Mansfield, Kirk Douglas, Jeff Goldblum, Damson Idris, Kyle MacLachlan, Tom Mercier, Jaden Michael, Louis Partridge, Ashton Sanders, and Filippo Scotti. Through their portrayals, actors echo truth as interpreters of reality.
Authentic, recognised figures carry a new dimension to the expression of reality with them. The everyday is elevated, its signs and signifiers exchanged for those of elegance and sophistication. Through these interactions, merit and value are attributed to human endeavour at all levels: perceived uniforms of employment take on new meaning.
Everyday activity is imbued with a sense of occasion – an import, a value, highlighting the importance of work for society. Respect and value are rematerialised in precious leather and silk tech as a collection of pragmatic uniforms of reality, eschewing hierarchy. In addition to this, sartorial tailoring is seen as a formality that confers importance.
Fashion can be pragmatic – sartorial construction methods are applied to knitwear, bomber jackets, and parkas, formalising examples of universal clothing. Elegance becomes a way of imparting significance. Garments exemplify constructed modernism, with their inherent architecture defining shape and form. Through traditional tailoring, the body is emphasised, shoulders and waist are defined, and this silhouette is then transmuted to everyday wear, combining the two disciplines as one.
Through fabrication and methodology, every genre of clothing is given equal consideration – every aspect of reality is assigned significance, a level of sophistication, and esteem, as well as lasting relevance.
