5 Surprisingly Simple Tweaks That Can Help Keep Your Teeth Gleaming
Cosmetic Avenue’s Dr Valence Roberts lets us in on some at-home ways to brighten your smile.

A great smile gives you a good first impression and helps boost confidence, but if you’re worried about what shade of white your teeth are, it can really be a blow to how you interact with the world. Obviously, a trip to your cosmetic dentist for a teeth-whitening treatment does wonders, but these are the tips you can use in between appointments to keep your mind at ease.

1. Meet your new friend, baking soda.

Not just for adding to cookies and cleaning hard water stains from glass shower doors, baking soda may help remove those stubborn stains from drinking coffee and red wine. The multi-use pantry staple can be used to enhance your teeth. You can make a paste with water and baking soda and brush with it or apply it with your finger and wait no more than two minutes before brushing as normal.

Studies published in the National Journal of maxillofacial surgery concluded that baking soda was a low-cost solution that could be used in conjunction with your normal oral health routine for long periods with no side effects. Rinsing with baking soda mouth rinse was easily tolerated by people with mouth ulcers and chemotherapy patients due to its bland taste.

Baking soda is also great for people with reflux or morning sickness as it neutralises acids. However, I don’t recommend using this all the time, as it can be abrasive on your enamel.

2. Use a straw when drinking

If you want to indulge in sugary drinks, energy drinks, wine, or alcoholic cocktails that may stain your teeth, use a straw. Red wine, grape juice, cranberry juice, and raspberry sodas can all stain your teeth. When your teeth get exposed to too much acid, it can result in enamel eroding. A straw can help lessen the staining. If you feel silly ordering red wine and sipping with a straw, order a sangria, which normally comes with a straw.

Bonus tip: Try not to drink staining drinks over a long period. The longer it is in contact with your teeth, the more it will stain.

3. Eating crunchy fruit and vegetables

Remember the adage, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’? It seems the same also applies to dentists. Apples help generate saliva production, which in turn helps rinse teeth from sticky remnants. It’s a good chaser to any meal, at least until you can brush your teeth or rinse with water. Strawberries also contain an enzyme called malic acid. Malic acid is a known natural bleaching agent and can help increase saliva production in people who tend to have dry mouths. Saliva is important for helping protect against tooth decay.

4. Rinse with water after eating and drinking

We know that Nutella Cruffin might have been delicious, or you might want to relish in savouring the taste of that carbonated beverage, but it’s important to rinse with water when you finish. This helps slow the build-up of plaque and remove debris from your teeth that cause tooth decay. We have so many processed foods and drinks, but a simple rinse with water to clear out bits stuck between your teeth and in the grooves makes a huge difference.

5. Use a whitening mouthwash

Some brands of commercial mouthwashes incorporate whitening ingredients to help brighten those pearly whites.

Mouthwashes are highly effective when combined with a good oral health routine that includes brushing and flossing. You can’t expect to swirl mouthwash around your teeth for 120 seconds and instantly have teeth that gleam. However, if you use the correct brushing techniques to reduce plaque and add in a whitening mouth wash, you will start to notice whiter teeth.

If your teeth are stained, you may notice a slight change, but probably not the noticeable results you may be hoping for. If you’re looking for the bright white TV commercial type smile, you may need to consider additional treatments, such as Philips Zoom Whitening or veneers. Not all smiles are created equal, and it depends on your oral health whether you could be considered eligible for cosmetic dentistry.

Bonus tip: Professional teeth whitening

This is surprisingly simple and quick. In just forty-five minutes, your teeth can be up to 8 shades whiter. Philips Zoom whitening is fast and cost-effective with no or very little sensitivity. Your treatment starts with a consultation to discover whether you’re an eligible candidate for teeth whitening. All it takes is the application of whitening gel and propriety LED light for surprisingly great results. If you are unhappy with your teeth being unevenly spaced or crooked, you may even consider using Invisalign or veneers.
