The Met Gala 2023, known as "fashion's biggest night out," is fast approaching, and I couldn't be more excited. As a fashion lover, I am eagerly counting down to May 1, 2023, the first Monday in May, when stars, young creatives, and industry paragons will gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to celebrate the museum's annual fundraising benefit. The Met Gala is one of the most exclusive events, and this year's theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," will pay tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, who was a regular attendee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute before passing away in 2019.
The Costume Institute, a department of the Met that hosts over 33,000 objects representing seven centuries of fashion, is currently curating its first two-part exhibition on the theme of American fashion. "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," and "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," opened in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
To watch the glamorous arrivals of designers, fashion icons, and Hollywood's biggest stars on the red carpet, viewers can tune in to E! beginning at 6 p.m. ET or 8am AEST. NBC will also be live streaming the carpet via their website and app.
The Met Gala is an invite-only affair, and tickets are hard to come by. A single ticket costs around $50,000, though designers may opt to buy an entire table for at least $300,000. I can only imagine the opulence and status that one can expect from a ball of this caliber!
Past themes have included "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" in 2018 and "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" in 2016, giving us unforgettable looks such as Rihanna's pope-inspired garb and Gigi Hadid's stained-glass inspired dress.
Once inside the museum, details of the event are tight-lipped. Attendants are expected to abide by a no phone and no social media policy, though stars often share a selfie or two from the event at some point during the night.
